Cedar: An Exceptional Wood

Native Americans first named Cedar as "Tree of Life." It provides unmatched durability and versatility. These qualities perhaps the most beloved of building woods for furniture. Cedar is indeed an exceptional wood for outdoor furniture for many reasons. Let us count the reasons!

  • How long will it last? (Maintenance and Finishes)
Cedar offers a wide choice of decorative effects and grades perfect for your home and budget. Paint or leave it natural, cedar gives you the choice.

Cedar will last 25-30 years unfinished. There is no need to treat the wood because it is naturally resistant to rot and pests. However some people like a little color for that it is recommended that you stain the product rather than paint it in order to retain the natural protection of Cedar. Just a reminder: If you must paint, use latex paint to allow the wood to breathe.

Cedar also offers a rainbow of choices. Though rich in extractive that enhance durability, it is free of the pitch and resin found in other softwoods which makes it ideal for a wide range of finishes. Cedar ranks at the top in its ability to accept and maintain a finish.

No "man-made" copy can come close to Cedar's natural color, grain and flexibility. It has unsurpassed dimensional stability and provides a great substrate for many of today's stain and paint finishes.

To make your Cedar furniture last even longer, cover it and bring it inside for winter, and do not let it sit in mud or water for long periods of time.

  • Durability and Density
Cedar will certainly deliver decades of trouble-free service. It contains natural oils that act as preservatives to help the wood resist decay. This oil also acts as insect repellent which is beneficial feature for any piece of outdoor furniture.

Cedar fibers contain natural compounds called thujaplicins that act as natural preservatives, making the wood extremely long-lasting. It lays flat and stays straight. The even grain and relatively consistent density makes it less likely to swell, warp and twist compared to other soft and hard woods. It will absorb or discharge moisture to attain equilibrium with the surrounding atmosphere. As a result, it will retain a distinguished appearance that lends a mark of quality to any home.

Cedar has a low density because of its large, open cell structure. Its low density enhances its insulation value. It is easy to work with and has a variety of uses. Its low density and consistency make it perfect to cut, saw, nail and glue. It will also not bow, sag or get brittle over time. It is heavy enough to stand up to all but the strongest winds yet lighter than most other wood.

It is estimated to be 80% strong as Oak but what comes along with that strength is an inner strength. It has strong tendencies to be resistant to both bacteria and fungi.

  • Natural Oil (Natural Chemical Content)
The oils which Cedar have protects it from moisture and humidity. Cedar would really be the great choice for use near pools and hot tubs.

Cedar has natural chemicals that give off a smell most people associate with the woods, the great outdoors, the fresh air, and cleanliness.

  • Thermal Conductivity
Cedar has what we called a good "thermal-coefficient." It doesn't radiate heat no matter how long it has been exposed in the sun on a hot day. You will still feel relaxed and cool while you sit on it.

  • Non Toxic
Cedar is nontoxic, making it safe for all uses. It requires no chemical treatment which is good for your health and also to the environment.

To sum it up, Cedar provides these numerous benefits without the need for harsh man made chemicals. You can enjoy the beauty of Cedar having no worries about maintaining its appearance and how long will it last!
